RACE REPORT 17 February 2024

21 Feb by Viney, Peter

There was no sailing on the tenth as we took the Friday before and the Saturday to set up and run the Club’s biggest annual fundraiser. And with the help of nearly all members (actually I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t contributed over the years) we had our biggest swim ever with nearly five hundred swimmers. Some of us remember when we had a cap of 250. Special thanks to Julie who does all the overall worrying and to Glen and John Price for course setting. Peter Viney did ground set aided by a ditch digger. Gratitude to John the tractor man. Andrew Dix did the ever reliable registration and most of the back room stuff in making sure the web site was going and organising sponsors and safety. Special thanks to sponsors Neville Richards, BBL and Glyn Harvey who supplies water melon each year. It was probably worth it to give up a what would have been a great day’s sailing for a financially successful swim, even if the Commodore was dragged in by surf life saving.

We were back to sailing on the 17th with a beautiful day in the mid twenties and a 10-15kn southerly. A great day to sail, but unfortunately no OK’s who were all off at titles in Queensland. Division 1 was represented by Peter Creak (Laser R), back from SA and showing that a week’s practice had done a lot of good, Peter E sailing a full rig, Dave and Clive on Radials and the Tasar Committee. In the first race Peter was easily two and a half minutes ahead of Peter E with Dave half a minute behind a mere three seconds up on Clive. The Tasar Committee trailed by 5 minutes and is considering a move into Division 2 as there seems to be more fun to be had in racing older or slightly slower boats rather than watching Division 1 from 5 minutes away. Last sail we paced it with the 420 and Impulse and this week we put pressure on Tony C such that he missed a jibe and went over in front of us. We passed and looked back and saw he was coming up so went on. Fortunately Lucy also looked and noticed that Tony going over so went back to assist.

In race 2 Div 1 Peter C was again two minutes up, this time on Clive who beat Dave home by a couple of minutes. Peter E had trouble on the start line and never threatened. After the race Peter C said that he spent a week in 25kn in SA with no breakages and managed two in 10kn at Indented Head.

Division 2 was a completely Sabre affair with Ollie Andrew, Billy, James, Lucy and Tony finishing in that order in race 1 by 2 mins, 2 mins, 30 seconds, one minute and 5 seconds. Lucy had gone to check Tony but wouldn’t let him finish ahead.

In race 2 Ollie and Andrew again finished first and second but with Lucy back at the top a mere second behind Andrew. Tony was 40 seconds back with Billy about a minute later.

Thanks go to Race Officer John Price who was assisted by Anne’s visiting brother, Peter, while Peter V was on the crash boat. Anne kept a watch and times from the tower where she was pleased to have Chris K T start the watch when she was on the beach. Julie did necessary stuff in the kitchen. Asher tested the laminator.
