Vale James Dott
21 May by Peter Ellenby
It is with sadness that we inform IHYC members of the passing of James Dott earlier this week. James was a dedicated member of IHYC for many years, sailing a variety of boats, including a skiff Moth and, most recently, Sabres.
James started his sailing in RYCV at Williamstown, sailing keelboats as a teen and competing in International Cadets. James raced against his twin brother Rob, who reckons he beat James more often than not (though James claims he was the more handsome one).
Despite facing numerous health challenges, James was well-known for his optimism and good humour. He was a tinkerer at heart, always experimenting to make his boat go faster. His boat setup changes were constant, ranging from adjustments in mast rakes to modifications in sail fittings. James always remained optimistic about the outcomes of these changes and maintained a good sense of humour even when his optimism didn’t pan out.
James owned a skiff Moth, which allowed for creative design flexibility, showcasing his lifelong passion for boating. He approached life with the same determination. When his medical specialist informed him that his health would prevent him from sailing again, James responded by purchasing another Sabre, which he sailed this season. After his lung transplant, he did the same, acquiring the blue Sabre that is now part of the IHYC Learn2Sail fleet.
In addition to sailing, James enjoyed making model boats of all kinds. He had an artistic flair and especially loved creating models of multi-masted schooners from earlier times.
For James, IHYC and the beach was his happy place, giving him respite from his health issues; he was open about his health challenges and his journey. At IHYC, James was well-known for his gentle nature and caring ways.
The Dott family will hold a service at the Indented Head Community Hall on Sunday, June 1, at 12:30 PM.
IHYC is assisting the family with the service, and catering will be provided.
We invite James’s fellow sailors to join us in the service.
