IHYC is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all members and visitors. IHYC has adopted the Australian Sailing National Integrity Framework polices that includes safeguarding children and young people. The link to this policy is on our website under rules, By-Laws & Policies. Rules, By-Laws & Policies — Indented Head Yacht Club (ihyc.com.au). We encourage every member to look at this information.
Child Safety is something we can all think about and undertake in our everyday lives.
The key points to keep in mind are
• keeping the child sailor/swimmer safe is a priority
• promote equality and respect diversity
• when encouraging sailing/swimming ‘line of sight’ of others and the sailor/swimmer and yourselves is important for every ones safety.
• remember as an adult you will be considered to have a level of authority. Respect this authority in your manner, the language you use and guidance you provide.
• encourage parents/guardian of the sailors/swimmers to be involved and to assist their child when required.
It is important to read and consider the Australian Sailing Child Safeguarding Policy such that you understand your responsibilities under Child Safety requirements with reference to but not exclusive of:-
• Not contacting the child sailor/swimmer personally including by phone, internet and social media unless required as part of IHYC responsibility and follow up
• Not taking photo’s without consent of parent/guardian. IHYC do request authority for training and promotional photos and videos but checking is still important.
• If a sailor/swimmer reports or you have a suspicion of abuse, you listen without judgement and work with IHYC Child Safety officer as to reporting to correct authorities through Australian Sailing or appropriate authorities. It is mandatory to report suspected child abuse.
IHYC will
• encourage all IHYC members to hold a Working with Children’s Card. IHYC would appreciate a knowledge of members WWC information and keep this confidentially.
• be available to assist you around Child Safety Practice if and when you require.
• continue to maintain and improve our child safe practices with direction from Australian Sailing.
