RACE REPORT 18 October 2025

22 Oct by Peter Viney

Your scribe was not at Indented Head this weekend. It was the eldest child’s birthday and the other children had arranged a day of outings for her. This required grandparents to come to the party and look after grandchildren. This had happened earlier in school holidays when Mrs Scribe had suggested that we attend ‘Dogman – the Musical’. (Here is a hint; do not buy, borrow or purchase a book called ‘Dogman’. They cannot be read; but if you want some let me know). On the morning of the ‘Dogman’ experience I suggested that the Melbourne show might have been a better call and this was recalled on the day of the eldest child’s birthday outings as Mrs Scribe booked tickets to the Geelong Show despite suggestions that the grandchildren would love to watch Grumpy sailing and help with timing races.

It is some time since I have attended the Geelong Show, but I seemed to remember that if you went through the main entrance and got past the steam engines, you immediately encountered sideshow alley and places to buy show bags. So with cunning, Mrs Scribe decreed that we would not go through gate 1, but enter through gate 3 and stroll in an anticlockwise direction past and through goat, baby animal and ultimately cow and chook displays. She was thwarted as the show directors had done their market research and strategically placed rides and ghost trains at gate 3.

Actually we had a good time with no tears, the chooks were a hit, your scribe was fascinated by the people showing dogs, and the one show bag each rule held together. (Show bags are not cheap these days).

Meanwhile at Indented Head YC, Race Officer Peter Ellenby ran three windward/return races with the assistance of John McKenna in the crash boat and Peter Viney manning the tower. We had welcome visitor Ron Fergusson (Aero 7) as the sole Division 1 competitor and in a similar sole position, Harrison McKenna, in what has been described as an immaculate Minnow, in Division 3. Division 2 was contested by Sabres sailed by Tony C, Ollie, Geoff D and James D. The sailing was close in Div 2 but in each race Ollie led Tony with Geoff and then James close behind.

With no sailing over the winter your scribe had a bit of spare time which he put to use by borrowing a couple of books from the Club so he could learn to navigate. Here are some of the things he learnt:
Held up at arm’s length, a finger is about 2 degrees wide. Hold up two fingers for 4 degrees. The average angular width of a fist is about 12 degrees. Stick your thumb out, and it’s about fifteen degrees from the tip of your thumb to the opposite side of your hand.
