RACE REPORT 22 November 2025
26 Nov by Peter Viney
Although overcast it was another great sailing day with what seemed to be 10kn r so breeze. Unfortunately only four of Div 1 and 2 sailors were there but were joined by 4 Opti sailors.
To be fair, Peter C was at Vic ILCA States in Geelong while Ollie was at Albert Park for a Sabre series. Also at Vic ILCA states were Aidan and Callum Simmons who were each dominant in ILCA 6 and ILCA 4 racing. Congratulations to both on winning the title. Hopefully sailing numbers are beginning to improve with both Geoff D and Andrew D calling in to see how things were going and thinking they will be back sailing soon. Likewise we hope Tony C is back in action shortly as we wish him well for recovery.
Lucy was sole and supreme RO and ran two races for Div 1 & 2 and a separate start for Div 3. She also managed to set the course, drop marks, reset the line between the 3 minute flag and 2 minute flag and take photos. A magnificent effort. Angelique followed Opti’s around moving between the more experienced Harry and Bobby and the two in a learners race of Elena and Clancy.
Division 1 had John W racing against himself for two successful races. It is sometimes surprising to realise how much quicker a full Laser is than a Sabre and he finished eight minutes ahead and had time to sail back to Ryan H, in his first race ever, and give some hints to him. Div 2 had some close racing as your scribe beat the 420 by six seconds with Ryan trailing. In the second race the 420 turned the tables as your scribe struggled to hold them off on the last beat home. Andrew and Lew led by 5 seconds at the end and, rubbing salt into wounds, used your scribe’s tactic from last week to overtake between the ID mark and the finish.
Div 3 did, in effect, two separate races with Harry and Bobby doing two laps while Elena and Clancy did one lap. Harry was ahead of Bobby by a minute in their one race while Elena was three minutes up on Clancy. .
Thanks to Lucy and Angelique on the course and to Alex and Anne in the tower. Julie was there but did leave to check Tony after lunch; most would have given sailing a miss. Special mention to Mike Williams who did not sail but was there all day launching, rigging and retrieving boats for learners and trainers.

With no sailing over the winter your scribe had a bit of spare time which he put to use by borrowing a couple of books from the Club so he could learn to navigate. Here are some of the things he learnt:
You will recall that I gave you a formula for speed using a cork in the first sailing report of the season. Here are some more:
• speed (knots) = distance (sea miles)/time (hours)
• time (hours) = distance (sea miles)/speed (knots)
• distance (sea miles) = speed (knots) x time (hours)
• distance off (sea miles) = height (metres) x1.86/vertical sextant angle (minutes)
• vertical danger angle (Minutes) = height (metres) x 1.86/radius of danger circle (sea miles)
• distance to the horizon (sea miles) = sq root of height of observer (metres) x 4.3
• kilometres = sea miles /1.852
• feet = metres /3.27
